Robert Patterson of Augusta County, Virginia and Elizabeth King of the same county married in 1752 and had the following children: William born 21 October 1753, Robert 1755, Catherine abt.1760, Elizabeth, and Ann Patterson. Robert and Elizabeth's son William served in the American Revolution. William served four tours of service, among them the battle at Long Island in the Holston river area in Tennesse and the battle at Kings Mtn. William married Nancy English abt.1777 in the Holston river area and later settled in Anderson County, Tn. The Patterson family came from Scotland and the king family from Ireland. The king family settled in Orange County, Virginia, and the Patterson family from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania- moving to Augusta County, Virginia. Both families later obtained land from the Beverly patent, settling in Eastern Tennessee.

Matthew Patterson son of William and Nancy was born 11 march 1796 in hawkins County, Tn.& grew up in Anderson County, Tn. and there met and married Sarah (sally) Mayberry abt. 1820. Sarah was born abt. 1801-1805. They had the following children: Nancy Born 1822, William 1823, Sarah 1827, Robert(Robin)1828, Priscilla 1833, Mary 1834, Barbra(barbry) 1836, Elizabeth 1840, and Finley 1841.
